MisHIN
Mississippi Health
Sciences Information
Network
MisHIN serves as the state’s knowledge center for health care practitioners by providing access to, and delivery of health sciences information over the Internet. In areas not served by other Internet providers, MisHIN offers Internet service and email. The network provides a powerful package of electronic information resources delivered directly to the member’s desktop at a reasonable cost. Members can search, request and receive current, accurate knowledge through a state-of-the-art Web-based system. MisHIN links research data and education with clinical practice for quality, cost effective health care delivery, patient education and health promotion programs. By offering electronic journals and digital textbooks, MisHIN serves as a virtual medical library. Its resources are comparable to those found in major academic medical center libraries. The network affords easy expansion and integration of knowledge-based resources to meet JCAHO information management standards for accredited health care organizations.
Membership is offered to any health professional, or health related organization in Mississippi. MisHIN features information services such as full text electronic journals and textbooks, biomedical citation database searching, and a monthly list of references on breaking-news health-related issues. Members receive traditional library services at reduced rates including interlibrary loan borrowing and reference services. There are other benefits which support the rapid delivery of quality health information, namely, web-based delivery of all services, electronic document ordering, onsite instruction and technical support, Web design and hosting, etc. Minimum requirements are internet connections and Internet Explorer 5.X or higher (preferred) or Netscape 4.X or higher. For fees and other information, check the MisHIN Web site at http://mishin.library.umc.edu.
Conceived by the state’s hospital librarians and established as a pilot project in 1989 (funded through the National Library of Medicine’s National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Southeastern/Atlantic Region), the Mississippi Health Sciences Information Network (MisHIN) serves as the state’s infrastructure for access and delivery of health sciences information to health care practitioners regardless of location. Initiated by sciences and academic libraries and other health agency information providers, MisHIN now enables its members across the state to link the newest medical information with clinical practice, and thus enhances both the quality and cost effectiveness of health care delivery in Mississippi.
