HIPAA: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library. HIPAA is the acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPAA was designed to improve the efficiency of the healthcare system and to provide national standards for security and privacy of a patient's health information. It also protects health insurance coverage for workers and their dependents when employment is terminated. Since HIPAA is a federal law, compliance is mandatory. Most entities will be required to comply to the HIPAA privacy rule by April 14, 2003.
