Heart Diseases

This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library. The heart consists of a muscle that pumps blood, arteries that supply blood to the muscle and valves that ensure the blood is pumped in the correct direction. Heart disease is any disorder that affects the heart muscle, arteries or valves. Some types of heart disease are coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease and congenital heart diseases. Based on 2001 statistics, coronary heart disease is the single largest killer of Americans. In state rankings, Mississippi has the highest death rate for all types of cardiovascular disease, a broad term, which includes coronary heart disease, heart attacks, angina and congenital heart defects.
